UNESCO Chair on Sciences of Education

The UNESCO Chair «Sciences of Education» (Russia) has participated in the «UNITWIN / UNESCO Chairs» program for 25 years: it was founded in 1992 and was the first one to be established in Russia. The high assessment of its activity by the Organization ensured the possibility of establishing of International UNITWIN Network of Pedagogical Education («International UNITWIN Network of Pedagogical Education: the Multicultural Dialogue Cooperation Program») on the basis of the Pedagogical University, which has been in operation for over 15 years.

Pedagogical University considers the established long-term cooperation with UNESCO, the UNESCO Moscow Office (until 2015), IITE and IIEP UNESCO, as well as with the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO to be of the most importance. As a result of this cooperation, pedagogical resources of universities are being significantly updated, most of UNESCO educational initiatives, namely «Education for all», «Inclusive education», «ICT in education», «Education for sustainable development», are used for the educational process and in scientific research.

An important stage in the development of the UNITWIN program was the decision of the 176 session of the UNESCO Executive Board, according to which the work of the UNESCO Chairs acquires a network character, i.e. the Chairs are to gradually grow into centres of advanced pedagogical experience for training and research in key areas of sustainable development.

UNESCO Chair provides network interaction with educational institutions concerned with similar issues, disciplines and priority areas.

In order to strengthen regional cooperation, our Chair coordinates UNESCO's pedagogical network, which includes about 50 educational institutions in 8 countries.  The Chair is a member of the Coordinating Committee of the UNESCO Chairs of the Russian Federation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and effectively interacts with 30 Russian Chairs for education.  At the national level, the Chair actively develops a network of branches for projects related to relevant international initiatives. With the support of the National Coordinator of the UNESCO Associated Schools Project, the Chair was one of the first in the Russian Federation to start cooperation with the UNESCO schools.

At present the UNITWIN/UNESCO Chair project is clearly aligned with the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The main direction of the pedagogical work at the UNESCO Chair «Sciences of Education»  is  the implementation of the «Education-2030» program and Goal 4 in the field of the quality of education —  «Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.»
